HILARIUS JASON PRANATA

by Jo Reiner Widjaja
A picture worth a thousand words, ain't that right? If you have never stood behind a camera, then you haven't really know whether the saying is true. The saying may refer on how a person could describe the intrinsic values of a photograph, but in my dictionary, i literally am saying about of how much words are thrown out to create a bad-ass photograph. From the location, to the lighting, to the timing, the wardrobe, the make up, the set, the props, and the directing of the models, all are a complete "oops i'm watching porn but my mom caught me in the act" total nightmare... But a very liberating experience, hence the millions of words thrown out in order to create a glorious photograph.

Well, in the spirit of all things visually awesome, i guess i'll present you guys with a fresh talent in photography. Hilarius Jason the name, photos the game. A 18 y.o. guy residing in Melbourne who currently is continuing his studies on communication design. A very talented kid who is a true bad-ass Indonesian talent with lots to offer to our society. I once had the experience to join him in a shoot and let me say it was pretty damn awesome. So here's a little dirt about Jason.
Model : Natasha M @ Darley Management
Stylist : Krissie Cao
Could you tell us a little bit of yourself? What were you like as a teenager?
I wish I was quirky back then, but no, I was just a usual teenager, wanted to take design / photography for my tertiary education. At first, my parents want me to take business/ accounting after a bit of debating (trust me its a big one) they decided to let me take design.
On personal projects, what inspirations does your photography originated from?
Folklores and old tales.
It was a photoshoot for one of the modeling agencies in Jakarta, supposed to be a group shot, 2 of the models came on time, while the other 2 came 3 hours late. I Swear, the first 2 models were in such bad mood (because the had to wait for the other 2 models for the group shot), that the stylist, assistant stylist, and myself were afraid to talk to them, we even tried to tell cheesy jokes.
What are the perks being a photographer? And what are the down side of it?
The perks : everything! Realization of the concept! See things in a different way
Styling : Tiza Caesara Nasution
Make up & Hair do : Shabura Sebastian
Asst. Styling : Zefanya Kezia
Models : Darya, Nina, Michelle, Borja @ POSHmanagement
Before you wanted to be a professional photographer, what did you see yourself in?
Haha, this might sound weird, but I wanted to be a pilot back then.
When did you first fell in love with photography?
7th grade, I took photography for my extra curriculum activity, since then, I just know that I wanted to become a photographer.
What kind/stream of photography are you interested in?
Fashion, what's not to love?
Would you please name several Indonesia photographers you look up to? And why?
Anton Ismael : He's just too good man! Don't know what to say.
Nicoline Patricia : She had her own style goin' on.
Hakim Satriyo : Subtlety and softness of his photography works.
Seeing the fact that the majority of your works are fashion photography, what do you think about Indonesian fashion scene and it's relevance towards photography?
I think the fashion scene in Indonesia is quite good, they have their own style, it's just they follow trend easily. If we go to the mall, everyone had the same clothes, the same pair of jeans, the same silhouette, even I had the same issue hahaha, We just need to find more reference. I don't know about other kinds of photography in Indonesia, but the fashion photography in Indonesia is progressing really well. Especially in the past 2 years.
In creating fashion photography what crucial aspects do we have to pay attention to?
Good mood I guess? Aside from that, we all know that the model, stylist, make up artist and photographer had their own roles.
Weren't you afraid that financially being a photographer wouldn't support you?
The future's not ours to see. As long as we stick to what we're doing, and the fact that God stays by our side, there's nothing to lose.
If you could work with anyone, who will it be?
Oyster Magazine
The down side : Nothing! Well.. except for the expensive equipments
And finally, what more do you want to achieve in life?
Become an internationally known fashion photographer

Wadrobe : Tribute Jakarta, STAB, Porte, Argyle and Oxford

We're sure that he will be a force to be reckoned with in the near future. Bagging clients like Oscar Lawalata and Argyle & Oxford, we all should be proud of this young new born photographer.
It will be a sin not to share the savviness of these indie talents with the rest of the world.
