Jakarta, 16th August 2014 — Expectation as people say is a double-edged sword, left unfulfilled it causes discontent yet it could also pleases you when you gain what you envision. It is a dull and tiresome matter to divulge but when something astonishing happens, one that is truly unexpected, it becomes a subject worth talking about. We arrived at Common House Jakarta at 09.00 in the morning, greeted by Nina herself we were then escorted to the second floor of the building. As we walked by and step up the stairs, we could not help but to feel the sense of calm in the air, the light was dim, the floors were warm-coloured, and atmosphere was serene. There was a change, this is unexpected. Nina is known to do elaborate shows with up-to-the-minute tune housed in a loft-like industrial space, and this is a complete opposite. We came early to see the backstage scene, and arrived just in time to see the dressed rehearsal. As the models lined up in their designated platforms — wearing traditional geta-inspired clogs no less, and as the make up team led by Christina Martha was retouching calves dan cheekbones,  Nina in a ritual-like manner was reaffirming each pieces of the outfit, it was as if she is blessing the pieces one by one. Once done, the presentation begins, this is another presentation by the house of Nikicio presenting their Fall Winter 2014/2015 collection. 

Jakarta, 16 Augustus 2014 — Adalah kepercayaan umum untuk seseorang agar tidak terlalu berekspektasi. Ketika terpenuhi, maka ekspektasi akan terpuaskan, namun ketika terbengkalai, akan menjadi sebuah kekecewaan. Ekspektasi merupakan sebuah probabilitas yang jenuh untuk diperkirakan, tetapi ketika tiba sebuah hal yang diluar ekspektasi terjadi, sesuatu yang positif dan mengagumkan, hal tersebut akan menjadi hangat diperbincangkan. Kami tiba di Common House Jakarta pada pukul 09.00 pagi, sesampainya disana kami pun merasakan suasana yang tidak familiar. Seiring di persilahkan menuju ke lantai dua dari gedung tersebut kami merasakan keheningan yang janggal yang jauh dari kebiasaan pertunjukan mode — terutama dengan ketenaran Nina yang selalu terkesan hip dan urban. Penerangan yang remang, lantai berwarna burgundy, dan kesunyian suasana memberikan nuansa pagi yang tenang. Kami memang sengaja untuk hadir lebih pagi, dengan tujuan untuk menyaksikan preparasi acara, kami datang bertepatan sesaat gladi resik akan berjalan. Tepat ketika model-model berwajah Asia tengah berlatih dengan pengarahan, dan seiring para ahli tata kosmetik melakukan touch-up, kami pun menyaksikan Nina Nikicio menata kembali tiap look yang ada, bak merestui setiap pakaian dengan izinnya. Kami berpikir "Kami tengah menyaksikan sebuah ritual mode...". Tak lama kemudian, sesaat semua telah siap, presentasi lini koleksi Nikicio Musim Gugur dan Dingin 14/15 pun dimulai.   

Notably the collection was stripped bare towards Nikicio's true ideals; everlasting, surpassing trend, and time. There are no prints or vibrant colours anymore - unlike her several past collections, but attention was made towards the fine details such as; quilted pattern on a jacket made out of baby terry material, or unraveling hem line on a crop top made out of jute material, or even our personal favourite; the clearly defined side-pleats on shirts and tops. Other than the detailing, what catches our eyes are also the silhouette; voluminous proportion and a rendition of the mullet style were seen. It's a monochromatic parade of comfort-wear that still weigh style and class. There were no accessories though, but fret not as the the collection itself gives so much punch in details. All in all, this by far is what we believe is Nina's best collection yet.    

Ekspektasi dan kenyataan yang kami temui begitu diluar dugaan, koleksi ini terasa penuh idealisme dan esensi awal yang kami kenal dari brand Nikicio; menetang tren, musim, dan waktu. Nikicio yang synonymous dengan corak dan warna, kini menampilkan koleksi yang begitu berbeda, diluar ekspektasi. Perhatian ditaruh pada detail, dan bahan yang dipergunakan; pola jahitan quilted pada jaket berbahan baby terry, garis hem pada atasan berbahan jute yang dibiarkan terkesan unfinished, dan our personal favourite detail side-pleats yang terdefinisi dengan baik pada atasan dan kemeja. Siluet pun terlihat berbeda, dimana jikalau pada koleksi lalu proporsi terlihat relaxed, pada koleksi ini volume terlihat pada beberapa pieces. Gaya mullet pun ditranslasikan oleh Nina kepada beberapa look. Didominasi warna monokrom, koleksi pakaian sportswear inspired nan nyaman ini tidak kehilangan gaya dan kesan mode. Secara keseluruhan? Kami merasa koleksi ini merupakan koleksi terbaik Nina.    

Suzy Menkes once wrote a piece entitled 'The Circus of Fashion', it depicted how in this modern day society the industry seems to celebrate poseurs outfitted in kitschy, multi-patterned, and multi-coloured ensembles, the more outré the more celebrated. We are creatures of the vain, a peacock in the aves kingdom whose pose and preen are gaudy. She reminisced the time when we were black crows; fashion folks gathered outside a hip underground fashion presentation in 1990s Paris all dressed in black while on-lookers passed by as they ghoulishly inquire in whispers "Whose funeral is it?". Being flamboyant and ostentatious are what expected nowadays, but leave it Nina Karina Nikicio to whip us a sense of the unexpected with her Fall Winter 2014 / 2015 collection. Nina has successfully lifted up a spirit within fashion that even Suzy Menkes would approve. As even the majority of the crowd that came were dressed in all black and white. 

Suzy Menkes pernah menulis sebuah artikel berjudul 'The Circus of Fashion', tulisan tersebut menjelaskan bagaimana dunia mode tengah berubah. Sekarang, dunia merayakan kehebohan dalam balutan yang menor. Jikalau diperumpamakan, kita adalah burung merak yang merayakan narsisme dan budaya pamer, berpakain heboh dan berdandan secara extravagant. Suzy menerka ulang keadaan pada masa 90-an Paris, dimana kita bukanlah seekor 'burung merak' melainkan 'burung gagak'; dimana orang-orang mode berpakaian serba hitam dengan label Yohji Yamamoto atau Comme Des Garcons, seiring akan menghadiri sebuah pertunjukan underground mode yang hip. Menjadi flamboyan dan over-the-top merupakan apa yang diekspektasikan pada masa kini, tetapi apa yang Nina Karina Nikicio tampilkan merupakan sebuah hal yang jauh berbeda dari itu. Nina berhasil menyalakan kembali semangat di dalam dunia mode yang bahkan Suzy Menkes akan setujui.

The small two by two metal space was filled by individuals who clearly came to be seen. But strangely there wasn't a whisper in the space, only a buzzing sound from a hand-talkie one of the girls held. Dressed to impress we were guided by the utterly hectic looking 'Nikicio Girls' (Girls styled in outfits oozing Nina's street savvy flair) to this cramped metal room at 10 in a Saturday morning. And why would we complaint? As all of us there at Colony Kemang were eager to see another collection by the Indonesian high street queen Nina Nikicio. As the small, cramped metal space elevated us six floors up the ground, the door slides open to an exposed space full of morning light from big bay windows  that runs along the corridor, showcasing the usual loft-like space Nina had always entertained us with. This is another morning presentation by the house of Nikicio.   

Ruang kecil dua kali dua meter dari besi tersebut terasa sesak. Individu-individu bersesakan dengan raut wajah yang penuh antusiasme. Siapa yang tidak bergairah? Jika Anda berada di lift tersebut untuk menyaksikan presentasi lini dari ratu high street Indonesia; Nina Nikicio. Sesampainya di Colony Kemang, kami pun diantar masuk menuju lift kecil tersebut, dengan hening hanya terdengar suara resakan alat hand-talkie lift tersebut mengantarkan kami ke lantai 6, sesaat pintu terbuka, terpampanglah sebuah ruang besar bernuansa loft. Sinar matahari bersinar terang dari jendela-jendela besar yang  menghiasi ruang tersebut, kami kembali lagi di sebuah presentasi koleksi lini dari Nina Nikicio.

White chairs are aligned in the centre of the room, where as we were being seated we found something unusual placed on our chairs. It was a jar, filled with granola, and a splash of yoghurt garnished by orange pulps. Yes, it was intriguing indeed. But one who has become familiar with Nina should always know that Nina is such a great story teller, she is not only a designer but a savvy brand advocate, telling and infusing story to her presentation is a tendency of hers, correction; a habit of hers. This time she promised that the collection would be more relaxed, hence the morning time presentation, and the breakfast inspired snacks that in a way serves as an entrée before the main course which is her fall winter 2013 collection. As it has become her calling card the collection displayed prints. But this time Nina did something fresh, using her own personal photography collection to be made into the prints, and using a recollection of a stork drawing she made as a child in her grandmother's house as details for the collection. Full of memoirs and personal recollections the collection is intimate, shall we say Nikicio The Intimate?

Suasana urbana begitu terasa, musik upbeat dengan ragam individu bergaya street style menghiasi ruang besar dengan dinding-dinding yang masih terekspos tersebut. Sesaat kami diantarkan menuju kursi kami, terdapat hal menarik yang kami dapati. Sebuah jar berisikan gandum granola dengan yoghurt dan sari buah orange telah manyambut kami. Aneh? Mungkin bagi sebagian. Tetapi bagi kami yang telah mengenal Nina hal ini sudah merupakan hal yang tipikal. Nina bukan hanyalah seorang desainer fesyen, melainkan ia juga merupakan seorang advokat brand. Dia mengerti bagaimana menceritakan sebuah kisah dan merangkainya di dalam presentasinya. Lagi pula Nina berjanji bahwa koleksinya kali ini akan terasa lebih 'relaxed' oleh karena itu kehadiran breakfast inspired snak ringan tersebut adalah sebuah sisi cerita yang Nina ingin tampilkan di tengah presentasi di pagi hari itu. Koleksi lini Nikicio musim gugur dingin 2013 kali ini terinspirasi dari cerita dan idealisme pribadi Nina, yang ingin terkesan effortless, bersantai, dan bersifat pribadi. Oleh karena itu pola dan detail yang ada pun berasal dari koleksi pribadi Nina. Apakah ini keintinaman yang ingin Nina tampilkan?

The overall collection does seem more reverted, this is seen through the silhouette and materials used. In the previous collection Nina displayed a little structure from the use of silk, leather, and heavy cotton. But in this collection the silhouette is more relaxed, less volume and the materials flows. Velvet shorts, jersey top, knitted cardigans, and maxi skirts all presents the idea of a effortless everyday wear. What is different in this collection is also seen through the vast array of accessories that Nina presented. Leather slippers, printed cotton snapped back hat, mini leather sling clutch, knitted beanie, and sheer shawl gives the whole collection a more bohemian and laid back tone than the usual heavy and urban inspired collection that Nina does so well. 

Koleksi musim ini secara keseluruhan menunjukan sisi ketenangan Nina. Hal ini terlihat dari silhouette yang ada, jikalau di koleksi yang lalu silhouette yang ada lebih terkesan kaku dan terdapat volume dengan penggunaan kulit, heavy cotton, dan pengginaan sutra, kali ini koleksi Nina lebih terkesan bohemian dan 'santai'. Penggunaan bahan jersey, cotton, dan keberadaan aksesoris seperti sendal berbahan kulit palsu, sling clutch, dengan paduan maxi skirt, beanie, atau cardigan membuat setiap look terkesan tidak risih.
