THE GOODS DEPT KOREAN INFLUENCED AESTHETICS

A little more than a month ago, we were privy to be amongst the first to witnessed the opening of The Goods Department Lotte Shopping Avenue store. The new retail shop has put an end to the drag of their teasing 'pop up store' that has been established there since the opening of Lotte Shopping Avenue. But alas, as the Lotte Shopping Avenue is a Korean managed, Korean curated, and Korean nuanced mall, thus even the usually industrial The Goods Department also changes it course into a gaudy monstrosity. But hand it to The Goods Dept to successfully done it in a tasteful way, who may i say has rightfully change my once very down-right-mean-spirited judgement to anything Korean into (at the very least) beginning to just opening up my mind to accept Korean driven aesthetics. Who knew vibrant decors and kitschy Korean embellish designs could look so cool? But all in all I hope this is the last of the Korean hype, please end it.  

Kurang lebih sebulan yang lalu, kami memiliki kesempatan untuk menghadiri acara pembukaan dari The Goods Department Lotte Shopping Avenue Store. Cabang baru dari The Goods Department ini, telah mengakhiri lamanya 'pop up store' dari The Goods Dept yang telah cukup lama berdiri di Lotte Shopping Avenue sejak dibukanya mall tersebut. Dengan kenyataan bahwa Lotte Shopping Avenue sendiri merupakan sebuah mall yang di-manage, di-kurasikan, dan di-design oleh management Korean, maka tidak heran jikalau The Goods Department pun mendesign toko mereka dengan sedikit estetika bernuansa Korea. The Goods Dept yang selalu terlihat forward dengan industrial desain dan warna monokromatik, sekarang berubah haluan dengan warna-warna vibran gaudy ala Korea. 

It's a sin not to share the savviness of these indie talents with the rest of the world.

The small two by two metal space was filled by individuals who clearly came to be seen. But strangely there wasn't a whisper in the space, only a buzzing sound from a hand-talkie one of the girls held. Dressed to impress we were guided by the utterly hectic looking 'Nikicio Girls' (Girls styled in outfits oozing Nina's street savvy flair) to this cramped metal room at 10 in a Saturday morning. And why would we complaint? As all of us there at Colony Kemang were eager to see another collection by the Indonesian high street queen Nina Nikicio. As the small, cramped metal space elevated us six floors up the ground, the door slides open to an exposed space full of morning light from big bay windows  that runs along the corridor, showcasing the usual loft-like space Nina had always entertained us with. This is another morning presentation by the house of Nikicio.   

Ruang kecil dua kali dua meter dari besi tersebut terasa sesak. Individu-individu bersesakan dengan raut wajah yang penuh antusiasme. Siapa yang tidak bergairah? Jika Anda berada di lift tersebut untuk menyaksikan presentasi lini dari ratu high street Indonesia; Nina Nikicio. Sesampainya di Colony Kemang, kami pun diantar masuk menuju lift kecil tersebut, dengan hening hanya terdengar suara resakan alat hand-talkie lift tersebut mengantarkan kami ke lantai 6, sesaat pintu terbuka, terpampanglah sebuah ruang besar bernuansa loft. Sinar matahari bersinar terang dari jendela-jendela besar yang  menghiasi ruang tersebut, kami kembali lagi di sebuah presentasi koleksi lini dari Nina Nikicio.

White chairs are aligned in the centre of the room, where as we were being seated we found something unusual placed on our chairs. It was a jar, filled with granola, and a splash of yoghurt garnished by orange pulps. Yes, it was intriguing indeed. But one who has become familiar with Nina should always know that Nina is such a great story teller, she is not only a designer but a savvy brand advocate, telling and infusing story to her presentation is a tendency of hers, correction; a habit of hers. This time she promised that the collection would be more relaxed, hence the morning time presentation, and the breakfast inspired snacks that in a way serves as an entrée before the main course which is her fall winter 2013 collection. As it has become her calling card the collection displayed prints. But this time Nina did something fresh, using her own personal photography collection to be made into the prints, and using a recollection of a stork drawing she made as a child in her grandmother's house as details for the collection. Full of memoirs and personal recollections the collection is intimate, shall we say Nikicio The Intimate?

Suasana urbana begitu terasa, musik upbeat dengan ragam individu bergaya street style menghiasi ruang besar dengan dinding-dinding yang masih terekspos tersebut. Sesaat kami diantarkan menuju kursi kami, terdapat hal menarik yang kami dapati. Sebuah jar berisikan gandum granola dengan yoghurt dan sari buah orange telah manyambut kami. Aneh? Mungkin bagi sebagian. Tetapi bagi kami yang telah mengenal Nina hal ini sudah merupakan hal yang tipikal. Nina bukan hanyalah seorang desainer fesyen, melainkan ia juga merupakan seorang advokat brand. Dia mengerti bagaimana menceritakan sebuah kisah dan merangkainya di dalam presentasinya. Lagi pula Nina berjanji bahwa koleksinya kali ini akan terasa lebih 'relaxed' oleh karena itu kehadiran breakfast inspired snak ringan tersebut adalah sebuah sisi cerita yang Nina ingin tampilkan di tengah presentasi di pagi hari itu. Koleksi lini Nikicio musim gugur dingin 2013 kali ini terinspirasi dari cerita dan idealisme pribadi Nina, yang ingin terkesan effortless, bersantai, dan bersifat pribadi. Oleh karena itu pola dan detail yang ada pun berasal dari koleksi pribadi Nina. Apakah ini keintinaman yang ingin Nina tampilkan?

The overall collection does seem more reverted, this is seen through the silhouette and materials used. In the previous collection Nina displayed a little structure from the use of silk, leather, and heavy cotton. But in this collection the silhouette is more relaxed, less volume and the materials flows. Velvet shorts, jersey top, knitted cardigans, and maxi skirts all presents the idea of a effortless everyday wear. What is different in this collection is also seen through the vast array of accessories that Nina presented. Leather slippers, printed cotton snapped back hat, mini leather sling clutch, knitted beanie, and sheer shawl gives the whole collection a more bohemian and laid back tone than the usual heavy and urban inspired collection that Nina does so well. 

Koleksi musim ini secara keseluruhan menunjukan sisi ketenangan Nina. Hal ini terlihat dari silhouette yang ada, jikalau di koleksi yang lalu silhouette yang ada lebih terkesan kaku dan terdapat volume dengan penggunaan kulit, heavy cotton, dan pengginaan sutra, kali ini koleksi Nina lebih terkesan bohemian dan 'santai'. Penggunaan bahan jersey, cotton, dan keberadaan aksesoris seperti sendal berbahan kulit palsu, sling clutch, dengan paduan maxi skirt, beanie, atau cardigan membuat setiap look terkesan tidak risih.

Unlike her previous collections, Nina promises her Fall Winter 2013/14 collection to be more relaxed. Relaxed structure and relaxed color palette, could only translate into a relaxed morning presentation. Thus yet again Nina will present her collection in 10 a.m in the morning! Prints are not the only notable uniqueness (the prints are of Nina's own private memento) of the Nikicio house this season, as birds were also spotted; Storks! GOOD news? Yes sir! The Goods Department; Indonesia's pioneering curated department store highlighting on local designers and indie fashion label is back in business with a new home in Jakarta's prominent high-end retailer mall Pacific Place (The Goods Department Pacific Place). And we got the exclusive peek on the whole look of the place, bringing up that cool vibe yet once again the new location of this rad conjunction place of local brands brought us back that industrial feel atmosphere that we love so much. From an exposed black brick wall, to concrete counters with wood paneling, and built-in wood racks, dimmed lighting, and an exposed ceiling this place is the epitome of satisfaction for Jakarta urbanite that long for a loft like industrial space that only existed in places such as; in New York posh Soho loft, or at one of NY's down town designers showroom. Yes, it is a rendition of industrial NY loft mixed with Indonesian retail culture and tradition of shopping in mall. And may we thank the great minds behind The Goods Department for their effort in satisfying our need for a coolness injection to our retail culture and for making Jakarta into the prominent symbol of Indonesian's youth and mod aesthetic in urban style, great minds such as; Anton Wirjono, Leonard Theosabrata, Cynthia Wirjono, and, Chris Kerrigan. So let us return your favor by saying it is GOOD to see you again.

The Goods Department; pioneer akan konsep toko departmen berkurasi arahan gaya, yang mengedepankan desainer lokal dan merek fesyen independen  lokal sudah kembali berbisnis dinaungan rumah mereka yang baru. Bertempat di Pacific Place mall Jakarta, The Goods Dept PP atau Pacific Place telah kembali dan memanjakan kita semua pecinta gerakan industri fesyen lokal dengan daya tarik yang telah menjadi gaya kenamaan mereka. Ya, gaya industrialis yang cool tersebut dibawa kembali dengan penampakan store yang sangat bersifat sederhana dengan segala penggunaan inspirasi ruang loft layaknya yang sering dijumpai di kota New York, dinding batu bata yang dicat warna hitam, dengan meja counter berbahan concrete , berserta panel kayu dan rak berbahan kayu dihiaskan dengan permainana lampu yang gelap menjadikan tempat ini sebagai pemuas keinginan para kaum urban Jakarta untuk suatu konsep retail yang berbeda dan baru, suatu suntikan dan injeksi akan 'coolness' yang memenuhi kebutuhan warga Jakarta untuk pernyataan diri kita semua sebagai kapital dunia mode Asia. Terntunya ketika berbicara akan kepiawaian dan keberhasilan arahan kreatif ini, kami harus selalu mengingatkan para tokoh dibalik The Goods Dept yaitu; Anton Wirjono, Leonard Theosabrata, Cynthi Wirjono, and Chris Kerrigan. As with the previous location, The Goods Department will also house The Goods Cafe, a casual eatery attached to the store. Where chef Arlene Susanto will be cooking up a variety of light dishes that are perfect for leisurely break from shopping or a quick bite to grab and go. Along with new dishes, customers will be able to order some of The Goods Cafe classics such as; the tomato soup with raisin walnut grilled cheese, or the infamous Bailey's Milkshake, and the ever popular Alma's rainbow cake. The Goods Cafe at The Goods Dept Pacific Place is due to open in early August, 2012. And the excitiment doesn't stop there! There will also be a webstore! Yes. The Goods Dept is planning to launch their web store after opening up their Pacific Place store. They are also planning to open up a new flagship store at Pondok Indah Mall 2 by late 2012.

Sama layaknya dengan lokasi mereka yang lalu, The Goods Dept akan juga kembali dengan The Goods Cafe. Sebuah konsep cafe kasual yang hadir di dalam lokasi The Goods Dept itu sendiri! The Goods Cafe akan hadir kembali di awal Augustus ini dengan menawarkan berbagai macam pilihan menu favorit seperti tomato soup dengan raisin walnut grilled cheese, atau the infamous Bailey's Milkshake, dan the ever popular Alma's rainbow cake. Pilihan makanan ini di desain secara khusus untuk memanjakan kebutuhan anda untuk beristirahat sejenak sesaat berbelanja atau jikalau anda berkeinginan untuk menyantap makanan ringan untuk di bawa pulang. Tidak hanya itu, The Goods Dept pun akan menluncurkan sebuah webstore! Ya, a newly designed web store that will be launch after the opening of the Pacific Place location. Selain itu mereka pun berencana untuk membuat lokasi kedua yang berletak di Pondok Indah Mall 2, dan akan dibuka pada akhir tahun 2012.
